Introduction

The OCR Level 5 Diploma in Teaching Learners with Specific Learning Difficulties (Dyslexia) has been developed to recognise candidates’ skills, knowledge and understanding of the Special Educational Needs sector and their ability to deliver effective teaching sessions to learners with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) affecting literacy and numeracy

The qualification aims to develop candidates’ skills and knowledge and to recognise their achievements in a practical way that is relevant to the work context. It is anticipated that much of the practical evidence required to meet the assessment requirements of the qualifications will be naturally occurring.

These qualifications have been accepted by the Qualifications and Curriculum Development Authority (QCDA) for inclusion in the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).

Entry Criteria

The Level 5 Diploma is designed primarily to provide a route for continued professional development for teachers working with learners with specific learning difficulties in literacy and numeracy acquisition. These difficulties may also affect communication and interaction
The target group is likely to include:
• classroom teachers and learning support staff in schools
• learning support tutors and trainers in FE and/or basic skills training
• qualified teachers who work as independent practitioners
• learning support tutors in HE institutions
• Speech and Language Therapists and other health professionals working in an educational setting
• Chartered/graduate psychologists

Candidates should hold a level 3 qualification plus a level 2 English Language
qualification or above.

All candidates will be required to attend an interview, and complete a diagnostic test.

Teaching Practice

Candidates are required to deliver learning support for a minimum of 20 hours. These 20 hours are divided between two learners, one learner with literacy difficulties and one learner with literacy and numeracy difficulties.
The learners must be within one phase of education (primary, secondary or post 16) but from two different key stages or FE levels/HE levels.

Candidates will be required to arrange their own teaching practice.

One hour of teaching with each learner must be observed by a tutor. Where an appropriate visit cannot be arranged permission must be given and the session videoed.

Location and Timings

The course will be held on a Tuesday evening from 5.45 pm - 8.45 pm and runs for 35 weeks. The next intake will be September 2012.

The courses will take place at the new 'dittas Dyslexia and Literacy Learning Centre' premisies in the Ravensbourne Business Centre in Keston.
