What is Dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a difference in learning and Dyslexic individuals will have a unique mix of strengths and weaknesses

The exact cause of dyslexia is unknown but it is commonly thought that it is caused by a difference in the brain area that deals with language (BDA, 2004). Visual processing problems are often associated with dyslexia and this can make print blur or move around( see information on visual stress)

Dyslexia is not a barrier to achievement and there are many famous and successful dyslexics. Dyslexia can occur in varying degrees and in people of different abilities. Dyslexia is not a form of slow learning and often dyslexics will excel in certain areas.

Possible Strengths
• Creativity
• Lateral thinkers
• Good problem solvers

Possible difficulties
• Reading accuracy and comprehension
• Spelling difficulties
• Weaknesses in Phonological Awareness
• Difficulties with visual processing
• Unable to proof-read accurately
• Difficulties with written expression
• Difficulties with short- term memory
• Difficulties with sequencing
• Poor time- management and organisation
• Difficulties with learning to tell the time
• Difficulties with some areas of numeracy such as learning number bonds, multiplication tables and understanding the language of maths.

Occasionally difficulties may be experienced with gross motor and fine motor skills, spatial awareness and laterality
